UNUSUAL DWELLING: HARRY’S HOUSE
The perfect desert hideaway for an artist living in Palm Springs. Like amateur hour with Buckminster Fuller, this makeshift retreat sits alone but in harmony with the Yucatan-spotted landscape. There was no one at home when DAMn° came to town, so here’s a tribute to Harry – wherever you are. (1)
GLOBAL ISSUE: THE ABC OF FEAR / SPATIAL POLITICS
The Occupied Territories and Israel throw-up a postmodernist concept of space at its peak. A geography of fear has transformed the notion of urban planning into a complex syntax of regulating the movement of people along the lines of nationality and destination. In the face of this, segments of Israeli civilian society are working to create seamless space with a series of architecture and planning projects that approach the situation bottom-up. (2)
PORTFOLIO: CHANGE OF SCENERY / JOHANNES LÖWE
When regeneration forced Berlin-based photographer Johannes Löwe out of his Berlin Mitte apartment it wasn’t a case of goodnight and goodbye. Returning to see how his brick family got on without him, Löwe documents its transformation from home to building site.
ARCHITECTURE: A VOLATILE FABRIC / BERNARD KHOURY
The Lebanese architect Bernard Khoury might be currently based in Beirut but that doesn’t mean he is willingly going to be slotted into some kind of geo-generational context with other architects in the region. Co-director of London’s Serpentine Gallery, Hans Ulrich Obrist, and Rem Koolhaas, speak with him about his work and the inevitable political perspectives. (3)

With the 30th anniversary of the death of Elvis it would have cruel not to have commemorated his passing in DAMn° style. Graceland Too is the creation of Paul Macleod, and this is a man on a mission to record all references to Elvis in all media. It’s a 24/7 operation, and even includes a home-grown homage to Jailhouse Rock. (4)
ARCHITECTURE: GOD IS IN THE DETAIL / A CARIBBEAN PILGRIMMAGE
The Basilica Nuestra Señora de Altagracia near the Dominican Republic city of Higüey is a masterpiece of the expressionist branch of late modernism. The tale of its creation is full of twists, turns, political intrigue and artists blowing their fees in search of a tropical Dolce Vita. A career-consuming project
for its French architect, it is now finally being celebrated. (5)
DESIGN: WHAT GETS ME GOING / ROSS LOVEGROVE
The work of industrial designer Ross Lovegrove contains a powerful DNA: Design, Nature & Art. Images from his recent visits to New York, Chicago and Vienna reflect only a nanosecond of things seen, but in this way show the designer how productive one’s life can be. (6)
ART: STATE OF A NATION / RAQS MEDIA COLLECTIVE
Delhi-based Raqs Media Collective is just one of the participants in an upcoming exhibition at the Mattress Factory in Pittsburgh. As a group of agile and nomadic media practitioners, the Collective’s baseline is gathering and processing information to come up with different ways of creating and thinking while engaging with new technologies. (8)
ART: THE ART POLICE / PETER GIBSON
Under the tag Roadsworth, Montreal artist Peter Gibson made several interventions in his own city that satirised and subverted the language of street signage. The results suggested a dialogue with the invisible infrastructure of every city, until he was arrested.
FASHION: FASHION AS FANTASY / BERNHARD WILLHELM
For German fashion designer Bernhard Willhelm and artistic partner Jutta Kraus, clothing collections are treated like they were insane tableaux vivants. From traditional Bavarian clothing, stuffed rabbits, Björk as a glam duck and French porn stars, this is a universe that can be compelling, sarcastic, dark and fun. (7)
DESIGN: CRAFT CREATURE / ARTECNICA
The Design with Conscience line by Los Angeles-based Artecnica puts the artisanal cultures and skills of many developing countries into contact with leading designers such as the Campana Brothers, Hella Jongerius and Tord Boontje. (9)
ARCHITECTURE: BEYOND THE SURFACE / LIN ARCHITECTS
The former German U-boat bunker in the French coastal town of Saint-Nazaire dominates the landscape. This huge hunk of concrete withstood a rain of bombs and its continued existence seems to be treated with ambivalence by the local residents. An architectural intervention by Berlin architects LIN realises a new art centre within its chambers.
DESIGN: WHAT GET ME GOING / THE BOUROULLECS
French designers and brothers Ronan and Erwan Bouroullec have a list of clients that includes global brands such as Vitra, Cappellini and Magis. Their work is sleek and cool but not cold, and while it is an ultra-modern experience there is always an invitation to let the imagination roam. Here they present their studio and hint at the organic process of creation. (10)
ART: THE OTHER MODERN LIFE / POST-SOVIET ART
The contemporary artists of Central Asia, in particular those from Kazakhstan, are the focus of the exhibition Time of the Storytellers, Distant Gaze in Post-Soviet Art at the Museum of Contemporary Art Kiasma in Helsinki. Stories that bring together different fragments of reality, the periphery is not so far away as it sounds. (11)
ART: BEEMER ART / BMW’S ART CAR PROGRAMME
Berlin-based artist Olafur Eliasson is the latest contributor to BMW’s Art Car programme, an initiative that has previously tempted the likes of Andy Warhol, Jenny Holzer, Frank Stella and David Hockney. His interpretation is a multi-sensory experience that not only brings together contemporary art, car design and technology, but also phenomenon such as global warming and the use of natural resources. STUDIO JOB: THE TOTAL NOTHING / STUDIO JOB
As Studio Job, Job Smeets and Nynke Tynagel have produced a series of limited editions, installations and interiors for names such as Bisazza, Bulgari, Moooi, Swarovski and Prada. Is it relevant to question them in terms of the design-art debate, or is that missing the point by a million miles? (cover)
VIDEO ART: THE DECODING SOCIETY / CONTOUR 2007
Contour 2007, the video art biennial in the historic centre of Mechelen in Belgium, presents works by a number of established and emerging artists. Physically intertwined with the fabric of the city, what impact can the event have in terms of creating an artistic dialogue with the local citizens? (13)

Using a palette of tools available to both the film and architectural industries, Squint/Opera creates films that flesh out architectural proposals in exciting and unexpected ways. Through a familiar medium, the team weaves stories that create engaging films that communicate often-complex design ideas.

Olafur Eliasson and Kjetil Thorsen have collaborated to create this summer’s Serpentine Gallery Pavilion in London. Already known as the spinning-top, this year’s Pavilion brings the added dimension of dramatic verticality into the mix. (14)
